One of the Council’s primary objectives is the dissemination of key scientific findings about tea to the public. The Tea Council does this in several ways including: funding scientific meetings to bring tea researchers from around the world together to share key information and identify next steps for future research projects; and working with health organizations and international scientists to disseminate information about potential positive health effects of tea consumption on a public level. This one-time contest will conclude January 2009 and the winner will be announced prior to the inauguration of the next President.

Morality of Profit Project 2012-2013

Award Amount
$20,000 Deadline Date
Feb 28 Awards Available
3

Scholarship Description

The SEVEN Fund is sponsoring a global competition inviting discourse on the morality of profit. During this yearlong program, we seek to assemble the definitive collection of essays on this topic. Writers are asked to submit essays of up to 3,000 words. Initial submissions will be accepted through February 28. SEVEN will award top honors to three essays, with a grand prize of $20,000, a second prize of $10,000, and a third prize of $5,000. The best pieces will be collected into a manuscript, which is intended for publication, and the program will culminate with an international conference.

A discussion of the morality of profit is timely. In the current global economic crisis, some critics have identified greed camouflaged as profit as the central culprit. This raises important questions such as:

* Are markets moral?
* Is profit a means, or an end?
* What is the relationship between greed and profit?
* Can the pursuit of profit be understood as a good in itself or a necessary evil?
* What are our core ethical responsibilities as we seek profits?
* What are the implications of the morality of profit to the cause of international development, and enterprise solutions to poverty?

The debate on profit is polarized along a spectrum, ranging from the pursuit of profit as the root of societal problems, to suggesting that profit is the only responsible measure of how to deploy resources and solve problems. In practical terms, we know that economic transformation requires invigorated markets that generate substantial profits. These tensions drive us to invite considered reflection on these issues. We are looking for submissions that examine all questions surrounding the morality of profit; that elevate the discussion; and that illuminate inflection points in the broader debate by exploring how this tension informs the key issues of our time (e.g. understanding the economic crisis, solving global poverty, stimulating entrepreneurship in poor countries, the environment, etc.).

SEVEN welcomes the submission of essays that explore the morality of profit through the lens of diverse cultural, religious, philosophical, and academic traditions.

Am I Eligible For A Federal Stafford Graduate Student Loan

To be eligible for a Federal Stafford Graduate Student Loan the government requires that the college student be enrolled at least as a part time student in a program of study. In order to apply for the Federal Stafford Graduate Student Loan you must first complete a FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov. After you have completed your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) your college will notify you regarding your eligibility for a Federal Stafford Graduate Student Loan. Once your eligibility is confirmed you are going to have to complete what is called a "Master Promissory Note", plus any other documents your particular school requires. After your eligibility for your Federal Stafford Graduate Student Loan has been confirmed by your school, it is best to contact your schools Financial Aid Department so you can find out your schools exact requirements for the completion of your Federal Stafford Graduate Student Loan.

What Are Graduate PLUS Student Loans

Federal Graduate PLUS Student Loans are an option for graduate students, when their Federal Stafford Graduate Student Loans do not cover all of their education expenses. Graduate PLUS loans are federally sponsored student loans, however unlike other federal student loan programs, borrowers will be required to pass a credit check for these type of loans. Graduate students are eligible for a Federal Graduate PLUS Student Loans if they comply with the following:

1. Are enrolled in a college as at least a part time student
2. Will submit to a credit check
3. Are a U.S. citizen or national, a U.S. permanent resident, or an eligible non-citizen.
4. Fill out and submit a FAFSA application

What Are Graduate Student Loans For Specific Fields Of Study

Graduate Student Loans for Specific Fields of Study are graduate student loans that are tailored to meeting the specific needs of the graduate program the student is entering. Some examples of Graduate Student Loans for Specific Fields of Study are MBA Loan Programs, Dental School Loans, Medical School Loans, Business School Loans, Law School Loans, and Nursing School Loans.

What Are Graduate Stafford Student Loans

Much like undergraduate Stafford student loans, Graduate Stafford student loans are Federal student loans, the difference being that for a graduate student the borrowing limits for the Stafford student loan are going to be higher to compete with the inflated cost of graduate school. Since Graduate Stafford student loans are federally regulated student loans, most students choose to exhaust the amount they can get from these student loans before they apply for private student loans. Graduate Stafford student loans come in two different types, subsidized and unsubsidized.

Difference Between Subsidized And Unsubsidized Stafford Graduate Loans

The main difference between a subsidized Federal Stafford Graduate Student Loan and an unsubsidized Federal Stafford Graduate Student Loan is who pays the interest on the loan while you are attend college. With unsubsidized Federal Stafford Student loans the borrower is responsible for all of the interest that accrues on the loan while you are in school. Once you graduate, all of the deferred interest that has been accruing while you were attending school will then be added to the principle of the loan. For subsidized Federal Stafford Graduate Student Loans, the federal government will pay the interest on the loan while you attend college, and during the deferment period(s).

What Are The Interest Rates On Private Student Loans

The interest rates for private student loans will typically be variable interest rates, that depend on the loan type, lender, and the borrowers credit score. Generally the higher your FICO score, the better off you are in terms of private student loans and their corresponding interest rates.

Am I Eligible For Private Student Loans

Private student loans are largely based on the borrowers credit score. Individuals with bad credit or little credit history may have a difficult time qualifying for private student loans without the help of a creditworthy cosigner. Even if you (the college student) have good credit, and qualify for a private student loan on your own, some private student loan lenders may offer a lower interest rate for applying with a creditworthy cosigner.

What Are My Options For Graduate Student Loans

With graduate student loans, your student loan options are similar to those of undergraduate student loans, the difference being that graduate student loans often have higher loan amount limits. There are three main sources for graduate student loans: federal graduate student loans, private graduate student loans, and graduate student loans that are specific to the program of study.

Who Needs Private Student Loans

Many college students need to apply for private student loans, because federal student loans often do not cover the full amount of a students college education expenses. Private student loans are needed by both graduate and undergraduate college students. Students should always exhaust all other college financial aid options before applying for a private student loan.

Are There Different Types Of Private Student Loans

There are different types of private student loans, and private student loans can vary with each lender. For example, some private student loan lenders will offer non-school-certified private student loans, and/or different private student loans depending on the college student's level of study. It's important that before applying for private student loans, you determine your needs, and then compare your options. There are many private student loan lenders out there, so be sure and find the one that can best fit your needs.

FAFSA And Transferring To A New College

Q: If I have decided to transfer to a new college, but have already filed my FAFSA with the information for my current college, will my FAFSA money automatically transfer with me to my new college?

A: FAFSA will not automatically transfer a student’s financial aid to a new or different school. Students financial aid eligibility is calculated on a number of different factors, including factors that are specific to the school a student is attending. While some types of financial aid, such as Federal Stafford Loans, are typically transferable from one school to another, other types of financial aid, such as Federal Work-Study, certain state-based grants, campus-based aid, and Federal Perkins Loans, are often not transferable to another school.

When a student transfers to a new school, that school will need to recalculate the students financial aid eligibility. Since each schools cost of attendance, available financial aid funds, and financial aid criteria/policies are different, the student may not qualify for the same types of financial aid, or receive the same amounts from each type of financial as they did at their previous school. For students who are transferring schools, you will need to contact the financial aid office at your current school and inform them of your intended transfer to the new college or university. Your current schools financial aid department will be able to inform you about any money currently owed, or any federal student aid refund you may be eligible for. Next, students will want to login to fafsa.ed.gov and add their new schools information. This will allow the new school to have access to the students federal financial aid information. Your new school should then send you a Student Aid Report within a few weeks, detailing what federal financial aid programs you qualify for and what amounts you are eligible for at the new college or university. For any questions regarding financial aid at the new college or university, contact that college or university’s financial aid office.

What Makes Federal Student Loans Different From Private Student Loans

The largest differences between federal student loans for college and private student loans for college, are that federal student loans have lower interest rates, do not require credit checks, and often times provide a wider variety of deferment options and extended repayment terms. It is because of the differences listed above that college students are advised to exhaust their federal student loan options (and other "free money for college" options such as scholarships and grants) first, and then supplement what the federal student loans will not cover with private student loans.

Many college students find that federal student loans do not cover the full costs of their college expenses. When considering a private student loan it is important to do your research. Compare different private student loans from different lenders to make certain you are getting the best deal and carefully read and understand your rates, terms and repayment options. Private student loans can help bridge the gap from what you receive in federal financial aid and what your full college expenses are, but be careful to not borrow more than you absolutely need.

National Merit ScholarshipRising cost of education is acting as a barrier for students who want to pursue college education and build up their career after high school. Even meritorious students are facing challenges in coping with high fees and other expenses while opting for a course, college or university of their choice. They are the future leaders and to ensure that their merit does not go waste, a number of merit based scholarships are available. National Merit Scholarship Program, administered by a not-for-profit, privately funded organization National Merit Scholarship Corporation, was started in 1955. But getting this scholarship is not easy as it involves a series of steps. Any college bound student must appear for the preliminary SAT, also called National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT), which acts as a screening test. It is attempted by more than million juniors from high school out of which top 50000 students are given recognition and their schools are notified. They are given a chance to choose two colleges they would like to pursue and NMSC sends their scores to the respective colleges. Then these students are notified by the colleges whether they have qualified as a ‘semi finalist’ or are ‘commended’. Commended students cannot compete for National Merit Scholarship but receive Letters of Commendation for their promising outstanding academics. Some of these students qualify for Special Scholarships which are sponsored by businesses and corporate. Around 16000 semifinalists are notified out of the top 50000 scorers out of which around 15000 reach the final stage. Based on their academics, skills, performance, talent, accomplishments, abilities and essay written by the person, around 8200 final merit winners are chosen from the group of finalists.

Merit winners get $2500 each at the freshman year of their college and it adds weight to their college admissions. Colleges boast of having a number of ‘National Merit Scholars’ enrolled with them. Many colleges also award large or full scholarships to National Merit Scholars to attract them to their college. They are awarded on state representation basis and do not consider the financial condition of the family.

The benefits are not only for winners, being a semi finalist or a finalist is also an appreciable position and carries lot of weight. It is a best way to gain recognition for college admissions and become eligible for different college and corporate sponsored merit based scholarships.

Though becoming a National Merit Scholar involves a stringent process, it is attempted by millions of high school students as more than the modest monetary scholarship it gives recognition to the students. Read MOre...

Federal Student Loan – Federal Monetary Assistance for Education

Federal Student Loan
Nelson Mandela has rightly stated ‘Education is the most powerful weapon to change the world.’ Education, with its endless benefits, is an important element of every person’s life. It not only helps in the development of a person as an individual but also helps in the progress of his family, society and the nation. With an increase in the importance of education, the cost associated with it is also increasing. Hence a number of students are opting for monetary assistance like student loans to pursue their college education. There are a variety of student loans available and it is important to opt for a loan that perfectly suits one’s needs.

One of the most preferred and economic type of student loans is the federal student loan. These are the loans for education given by the federal government and are provided through the Federal Direct Student Loan Program (FDLP) by U.S. Department of Education. The federal government program for loan to students has been designed to cater to diverse group of students. This loan can be subsidized or unsubsidized. In a subsidized loan, interest on loan is paid by government when the student is completing his education. In an unsubsidized loan, the interest on the loan has to be paid by the borrower. Fixed, low interest rate and no collateral or credit checks make it a favorable option for students.

Federal student loans can be further classified as–

• Stafford Loans – These loans are available on subsidized and unsubsidized basis for undergraduate as well as graduate students. These loans are not subject to an approval of credit and also offer 6 months deferred repayment period.

• Perkins Loans – These fixed interest rate loans have very generous terms and are designed especially for students with acute financial needs. They can be taken by undergraduate or graduate students who qualify in the loan terms.

• Parent Loan for Undergraduate Student (PLUS) Loans – These loans are taken by parents for the education of their children. The loan terms are different than other types of federal loans like the interest is comparatively higher, commitment of repayment is done by parents etc.

• Consolidation Loans – These loans are for students who have more than one federal student loan to repay. They can consolidate the various loans into a single loan at a fixed interest rate and longer repayment term.

The benefits of federal student loans are –

• Federal loans offer a grace period (deferred repayment) after the completion of education.

• Rate of interest is lower than private loans like for undergraduates it usually ranges in 3.4% to 6.8%, depending on the type of loan.

• As rate of interest is fixed, the repayment amount stays same over the loan period and without any ‘surprise’ increases.

• Less stringent credit requirements makes most of the students eligible for federal loans.

• Federal loans are designed in a way that the borrower is protected even if he runs into a financial trouble.

Any parent or student must explore the varied options available under federal student loans before opting for a private loan.

A wise, careful and well-thought made choice of loan will save you from being burdened under a mountain of debt to be tackled after the completion of your education. Read More...

Stafford Loan – Federal Loan for Education

Stafford Loan
It is commonly seen that cost of education rises with the level of education from school to undergraduate, graduate and post graduate. Most students seek various avenues like scholarships, grants and financial aids to support the high cost of their education. If these do not work or are not sufficient, they knock on the doors of federal student loan to acquire monetary assistance for their education. Of the various types of federal student loans designed to suit different needs, Stafford Loan is very popular among the students.

A Stafford Loan helps students with their tuition fees and other educational expenses. This loan was previously known as Federal Guaranteed Student loan but in 1988 it was named in honor of U.S. Senator Robert Stafford as Stafford Student Loan Program. Popularly known a Stafford Loan, it provides loans to undergraduate, graduate or professional students at a fixed, low rate of interest. They can be obtained from credit union, bank or from the government and are regulated by federal government.

They can be classified as–

• Subsidized Stafford Loans – In a subsidized Stafford loan, while the student is in school the interest is paid by the government. Even during the authorized deferment period and during the grace period, the interest is paid by government. The student needs to be enrolled in a school for atleast half time (6 credit hours) and if he drops out of school then he becomes responsible for the monthly repayment.

• Unsubsidized Stafford Loans – In an unsubsidized loan, government does not pay the interest and entire repayment is done by the borrower.

To become eligible for a Stafford Loan, whether subsidized or unsubsidized, the person must submit the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) application. The student must also be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate course atleast on a half-time basis. The type of loan for which a person qualifies depends on his financial/dependency status and EFC (Expected Family Contribution).

Interest rate is fixed for Stafford Loan and is 3.4% for subsidized loans and 6.8% for unsubsidized. Repayment of Stafford Loan begins after a grace period of six months after graduation or termination of the study program (whichever is first). There is no need for credit approval and can be consolidated later.

But Stafford loan follows increasing borrowing limits and one cannot access the entire loan amount at once. Depending on the status of the degree and how far person is in school (number of years) a person can access the loan for example, undergraduates can take an amount of $5500 in first year,$6500 in second and $7500 each year until they reach $31000. The limits are separate for dependent undergraduate students, independent undergraduate, professional and graduate students.

The benefits of Stafford Loans make it a popular and lucrative option to secure low cost financial aid to support one’s education. These loans are student’s first choice in federal loans and have earned the reputation of making college payments easier. Read More...
