Postdoctoral fellowships in instrumentation and origins of stars

The Laboratory is a key space sciences research unit in Portugal with strong activities in astronomical instrumentation and astrophysics, having a national scope with offices in Lisbon and Porto. Our instrumentation activities include leading the Portuguese participation in the ESA/GAIA satellite and the ESO/GRAVITY experiment. Our astrophysical activities range from star and planet formation to black-hole physics, including models and observations. Projects interfacing astrophysics and Earth climate are also starting.

The infrastructures completely allocated to the Laboratory includes a data processing center with 160 cores and 100TB of disk, an optical instrument control interferometer, vacuum and cryogenic facilities.

We seek postdoctoral fellows to strengthen our activities. The fellows are expected to integrate in the team, with large research liberty, international collaborations being strongly supported. The recruiting priorities are.

Lisbon offices: Astronomical instrumentation and data processing, planets, astrophysical exploitation of GAIA, in the fields of: a) structure and evolution the Milkyway; b) star clusters and c) stellar variability.

Porto offices: E-ELT, high angular resolution techniques (interferometry, adaptive optics); astrophotonics; star and planet formation.

walmart scholarship AGA Educational Development Fellowship,Australia

The Fellowship is made available jointly by the Australian German Association and the Goethe-Institut, offering young Australians a 12-week stay in Germany. This comprises an 8-week language course at a Goethe-Institute in Germany, as well as a grant of AUD 6 000.00 towards a 4-week study tour in Germany, visiting companies/institutions in the special interest field of the Awardee. The airfare to and from Germany is also included. The scholarship is advertised between February and May each year.
Applicants must have excellent academic tertiary qualifications and the prospect of a promising career in business, law, science, political studies or the arts. They must also have a good knowledge of German and Australian citizenship, and be under the age of 35 on 1 July of the year the application is lodged.

Isobel Bennett Marine Biology Fellowship,Australia,Fellowship

The Isobel Bennett Marine Biology Fellowship is named in recognition of the late Dr Isobel Bennett who was one of Australia’s eminent marine biologists. The Hermon Slade Raiatea Foundation has provided funding to the Lizard Island Reef Research Foundation (LIRRF) to enable this fellowship.

Benefits
The maximum value of each 2011 fellowship is AU$11,000, payable in April 2011 and to be spent within one year. For successful applicants who are employed at Australian institutions and who can thus provide Australian tax invoices, the payments will be $11,000 plus $1,100 GST.

Conditions of Award
* Fellowship funds are intended to contribute towards the costs involved in conducting field work at Lizard Island Research Station. Salary and equipment (other than consumables) are not covered by the Fellowships.
* Expenditure of Fellowship funds is restricted to:
o Bench fees at Lizard Island Research Station for the fellow and up to two assistants at the current applicable rates. Bench fees must be paid from a different source for any accompanying postgraduate students who are working on their own projects.
o The John and Laurine Proud Fellowship and the Yulgilbar Fellowship allow for economy class travel between the fellow’s home institution andLizard Island, for one trip only.
o The Isobel Bennett Marine Biology Fellowship allows applicants who are based at an Australian institution to claim for travel between that location and Lizard Island via Cairns but overseas applicants may claim only for travel between Cairns and Lizard Island. In both cases, travel for only a single trip may be claimed.
o Additional research expenses incurred at Lizard Island. These may include freight charges for food and equipment between Cairns to Lizard Island, communications, use of a larger boat for work at reefs away from the Lizard Island group, research consumables etc.

Optimisation of the processing of green/recyclable composites for reduced carbon footprint in automotive/sustainable development applications

Applications are invited for a three-years, fully funded PhD studentship, open to candidates in the UK/EU or UK permanent resident only. The studentship will be funded at the normal rate (full home student fees plus a tax-free grant of up to £13,000), with the opportunity of undertaking additional paid undergraduate teaching. For overseas student only the tuition fee could be covered. Overseas candidates need to clearly state in their application that they would be able to cover their maintenance in order for their applications to be considered.

Project

The successful candidate will be working on developing optimum process and compounding of composites of natural fibres with possibility of biodegradation and recycling. The project would involve a multiobjective optimisation as the aims would be to reduce the carbon footprint and also to obtain best quality green composite. The quality of the manufactured composite would be checked for the standards required for the application in automotive and sustainable developments.

Phd Scholarship 2012-2013 in Agrobiodiversity, Italy

The PhD Programme in Agrobiodiversity is aimed at the enhancement of human resource capacities in the use and management of genetic variation in agricultural and natural systems, in order to improve the sustainability of agricultural systems and the conservation of genetic resources for the well-being of present and future generations.

The Programme is structured in the following curricula:

Curriculum A – Plant genetic resources: teaching and research activities take place in ENEA Research Center at “La Casaccia”, a few kilometres from Rome;
Curriculum B – Functional biodiversity in agroecosystems : teaching and research activities take place in Pisa, at Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies.

Admission Requirements

- possession of a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree or equivalent title in Experimental Sciences, at an Italian or foreign university and ssession of a Degree awarded after, at least, a four-year course in Experimental Sciences;
- to be younger than 35 years (date of birth after 15 July 1975), older than 35 may be exceptionally admitted by the Admission Committee.

6 positions with 6 fellowships (the net amount is € 12.500, all inclusive):

PhD Postdoc position in Molecular Biology Biochem 2012 at Univ of Bern

One Postdoc and one Ph.D. position in over-expression, biochemistry and structure of membrane transport proteins

Description Our vision is to assess the structure, supramolecular organization and dynamics of membrane transport proteins by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and X-ray crystallography (XRC). To this end, we clone, over-express, purify and crystallize transport proteins in 2- (2D) and 3-dimensions (3D). 2D crystals are analyzed by TEM/electron crystallography and AFM, while 3D crystals by XRC. Tasks of the successful candidates will involve cloning, over-expression and purification of pro- and eukaryotic membrane transport proteins for functional and structural studies.

Our work is part of the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR) TransCure From transport physiology to identification of therapeutic targets. Required qualifications The Postdoc / Ph.D. candidate should have a Ph.D. / Master degree in molecular biology or biochemistry. Experience with the over-expression in bacteria and yeast, and with the biochemistry of membrane proteins is compulsory.

Experience with transmission electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy or X-ray crystallography would be an advantage. From the beginning of the academic year 2011/2012, Faculty of Science launches a new PhD support program for talented students from all over the world. Prospective students can apply to PhD research topics selected by the Research Council of the Faculty and announced on the web pages on February 3, 2011. In addition to standard PhD scholarship obtained from the Ministry of Education (in the first year 6,050 CZK per month), applicants selected for the STARS program will be awarded additional 10,000 CZK or more per month
