Purpose of award: To give middle school students the opportunity to express their views on democracy.
Eligibility requirements: Students must be 6th, 7th or 8th graders. They must write a 300-400 word essay based on a theme chosen by the VFW related to patriotism.
Target applicant: Junior high students or younger
Minimum GPA: None
Amount: Up to $10,000.
Number of awards: Varies
Deadline: November 1.
How to apply: Applications are available from your local VFW Post, VFW State Headquarters or VFW National Programs.
